What it involves

Practical support for structure, daily routines and independence

Outreach support (ambulante begeleiding in Dutch) means bringing practical guidance into daily life, rather than working in a clinic or office. Support can take place at home, at school, at work or wherever structure and routine actually play out.

The approach is calm and tailored: we start by mapping out what is actually happening, what causes stress, what already works, and what one clear step could make a real difference right now. Support stays concrete, manageable and matched to the real situation.

The focus is often on

  • Building a workable daily and weekly structure
  • Managing sensory triggers, stress and recovery
  • Clearer communication and realistic expectations
  • Building independence through small, sustainable steps
  • Setting boundaries and keeping agreements
  • Coordination with parents, school, work or other involved parties

For background on care and support in the Netherlands, see the Dutch government’s English overview of long-term care (opens in new tab).

Recognisable situations

When outreach support can make a practical difference

Getting stuck in daily structure

When mornings, appointments, school, work, household tasks or self-care repeatedly feel unmanageable, support helps build a practical day-to-day routine that actually holds.

Sensory overload or stress

Noise, crowding, social pressure or unexpected changes can quickly build into stress. Support focuses on recognising signals earlier, building in recovery time and making daily situations more predictable.

For a dedicated focus on sensory processing and autism, see autism support Amsterdam.

School, work or social demands

When tasks, expectations or social situations make too many demands at once, we work together on ways to make responsibilities smaller, clearer and more achievable.

Building independence

Support can help with keeping appointments, making decisions, setting boundaries, taking responsibility and gradually developing more personal agency and self-direction.

Tension at home

Tension often builds when expectations, agreements or communication are not clear enough. We look together at roles, boundaries and practical arrangements that work for everyone in the household.

Planning and executive functioning

When starting tasks, organising, remembering, finishing or setting priorities is difficult, we work with concrete tools and small steps that are genuinely sustainable in daily practice.

Who it’s for

For children, teens, adults, families and expat households

Children and teenagers

Support can help with school demands, stress, sensory sensitivity, emotional regulation, independence, social situations, boundaries and maintaining structure through the day.

Adults

For adults, support can address planning, daily routines, maintaining an overview, sensory sensitivity, workload, independence, communication and balancing obligations with recovery.

Parents and families

Support can help parents and families with parenting questions, communication, creating calm at home, clear agreements, coordination and practical tools for daily family life.

Expat and international households

NNorthHarp works in English and Dutch. Whether you have recently arrived in Amsterdam, are navigating Dutch schools or care systems, or simply prefer English, you are welcome to reach out and discuss your situation.

Context

Support at home, school, work and in the community

At home and in the family

We look at routines, communication, tension in the household and what would bring more calm, predictability and clearer agreements into daily family life.

At school or in education

With school pressure, planning, attendance, homework or communication between home and school, support can help create a clearer and more manageable approach.

At work or in day activities

For adults and young people, support can connect to work, internships, day activities and the balance between responsibilities and recovery time.

In social situations and the community

Social demands, setting limits, handling unexpected situations and coordination with others outside the home can all be part of what the support addresses.

Autism and sensory processing

A dedicated page for autism, predictability and sensory guidance

Within outreach support, autism or sensory sensitivity can be an important focus. When this is the case, the support calls for extra attention to predictability, clear communication, transitions, recovery moments and sustainable agreements in daily life.

Because this question is more specific than general outreach support, NNorthHarp has a dedicated page with more detailed guidance on support for autism, sensory overload and daily structure.

Signs this may apply

  • Sensory triggers, noise or unexpected changes cause significant stress
  • Predictability and clear agreements are essential
  • Daily structure or transitions take a great deal of energy
  • Communication with home, school, work or others needs coordination
  • Calm, concrete and sustainable support is what is needed
Our approach

Clear, calm and step by step

1. Introductory conversation

We discuss the situation calmly: what is happening, what the support question is and what feels most pressing right now. No commitment required.

2. Making goals concrete

Together we break goals into small, clear and achievable steps, so it stays clear what we are working towards and why.

3. Support in daily life

The support connects to everyday situations: at home, school, work, in the family or wherever it is most relevant to the person.

4. Evaluating and adjusting

We check in regularly on what is working, what has changed and where the focus needs to shift.

Funding

PGB and Wlz: funding routes for outreach support

Personal budget (PGB)

In some situations, outreach support can be arranged via a persoonsgebonden budget (PGB), a personal care budget. Clear goals, careful agreements and good coordination are important when this route applies.

Official information (in Dutch): Rijksoverheid on PGB (opens in new tab) and SVB PGB (opens in new tab).

Long-term care (Wlz)

Support can also fall within the Wet langdurige zorg (Wlz), the Dutch long-term care act, depending on your situation, indication and care agreements. NNorthHarp does not issue Wlz indications.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about outreach support

What is outreach support, and is it the same as therapy?

No. Outreach support is not therapy or clinical treatment. It focuses on practical guidance in daily life: building structure, managing routines, reducing stress, improving communication and increasing independence. NNorthHarp does not diagnose and does not provide medical or psychological treatment.

Is support available in English?

Yes. NNorthHarp offers support in both Dutch and English, making it accessible to expat families and international residents in Amsterdam and the surrounding region. You can reach out via the contact page.

Can support take place at home, school or work?

Yes. Support is tailored to where daily life actually happens, at home, at school, at work, in the family or in social settings. The focus is on steps that are practical and sustainable in the real context.

How do I get started, and is there a commitment or waiting period?

You can reach out for a no-obligation introductory call to discuss your situation. There is no long commitment required to start. After the introductory conversation, you can decide whether to proceed at your own pace.

Can outreach support be funded through PGB or Wlz?

Depending on your situation, existing indication and care agreements, support may take place via a personal budget (PGB, persoonsgebonden budget) or within a long-term care (Wlz) context. NNorthHarp does not issue indications, does not submit applications and does not decide on funding.
